St George the Martyr, Wootton

Sunday Next Before Advent – 20th November 2011

A warm welcome to you all to our Creative Communion service.

Readings: Ephesians 1:15 – end; Matthew 25:31 - End

Prayer: O God, we place our children in your hands.  We ask:

Not that you will shield them from difficulty, but that you will give them the strength to face it

Not that you will protect them from making mistakes, but that they may be able to learn from them

Not that their lives will be easy, but that they will deal with its challenges courageously.

Be with them when they are vulnerable, protect them from lasting harm, and keep them always in your love. {A.A.}

Please include in your prayers:

Those who are unwell: Hebe, Peter Smith, Sarah Wade, David / Felicity and their son Mark Halsey, Lisa, Kate Hartwell, Kath Rose, Barbara Rex, Dave Maull, Eric Kenyon who is recovering from a 2nd knee replacement operation, Jai (Jenny Bowerman’s sister), now home from hospital and Jeff Wood.

Coming Up:

Christmas Services: Please take a postcard and share it with a friend.

Christmas Crib:  Calling all knitters!  If you would like to knit a figure for the crib please see Jenny who has patterns and some wool.  We also need a flock of sheep!

Home Groups:  Would you like to join a group to study the Bible and get to know others in the church family better?  If you would like to join either the Tuesday evening or the Thursday evening groups, which meet fortnightly, please speak to Janet (891989) or Alan (761313).

Church Development: Final plans and submission for our Toilet and Servery, and new lockable glazed doors for the tower were considered by the Diocesan Advisory Committee this week. This is Phase 1 of the long term plans. We don’t yet know their decision – keep praying for approval and for money to come in.

Church Website: The Church Website is now live and can be viewed at www.stgeorgeschurch.org.uk. It is 'work in progress' and can be added to or updated at any time, so if you have any ideas on improvements or content, please pass them on to Alan Stokes on 761313 or e-mail them to stokescw@yahoo.co.uk.

Friends of St. George’s Fund Raising: We now have fliers available to encourage more people to join.   Would you be willing to deliver them to houses in your street to help with our fundraising?   If so, please let Sue Oswin know how many you need (767440).

Mens Social: Takes place on the last Friday of every month.  As a general rule, assume 8pm at the Yeoman.  Any variation to this will be advised via the notices and website.  All men welcome.

Christmas Social: We are holding a joint Ladies’ and Mens’ social for December, which will replace the usual evenings.  This is taking place at the Yeoman on Friday 9th December (2nd Sunday) from 7:30.  It will be an informal meal and all are welcome.  A table has been provisionally booked, but we need to give approximate numbers as soon as possible.  If you are interested in coming, please advise either Doug, Alan, Peter or Connie.

Verger Duties: We are looking to add a few more names to our list of Vergers in order to ensure we have enough cover for wedding and funeral church preparations during 2012.   Please speak to Alan or Peter if you think you could help.  A small fee is payable to the duty verger on the day.

FIRE SAFETY: In the event of being made aware of a FIRE please leave the church immediately no matter how small the fire, taking care that those around you are aware of the problem.  Our fire exits are the main entrance door and at the back of the bell tower.  Please follow any instructions given by the duty sides persons and church wardens who will assist in the evacuation.

Once you have left the building please assemble by the new memorial/rose garden in order that we can account for everyone.

Favell House Closure: Favell House is a day centre and respite unit for adults who suffer from long-term health problems such as Multiple Sclerosis. The day centre is under threat of closure due to a shift in funding from the local authority to the health authority.  Favell House currently has a reprieve until January. Would you please sign the petition to help try and keep this valuable unit open permanently?  If you would, please see Christine.
